On World Sleep Day, GymNation Launches NapTime™, The Middle East’s First Gym Class Designed To Help You Fall Asleep

Launched to mark World Sleep Day, NapTime™ responds to a growing regional sleep deficit, with only around one in five adults achieving the recommended eight hours of sleep per night, and roughly one in five UAE adults sleeping five hours or less.

Dubai, United Arab Emirates – 13 March 2026: In a city that rarely slows down, GymNation is doing the unexpected: launching NapTime™, the first gym class in the Middle East designed not to make you sweat — but to make you sleep.

The initiative arrives as sleep deprivation becomes an increasingly visible health concern across the UAE and wider GCC. Regional research indicates that while around half of adults report sleeping between six and eight hours per night, only one in five achieve the recommended eight hours or more. In the UAE specifically, approximately one in five adults sleeps five hours or less. Global data also ranks the UAE among the world’s latest sleepers, with many residents going to bed after midnight and averaging just 6.85 hours of sleep, below the recommended seven to nine hours.

Against this backdrop, recovery is no longer optional; it is becoming essential for physical performance, mental clarity, and long-term health. As recovery trends gain momentum globally, GymNation is shifting the conversation inside the gym. NapTime™ focuses entirely on structured rest and recovery because, as the brand puts it, “recovery is the new cardio.”

Unlike traditional workouts, NapTime™ unfolds across four calming stages. The class begins with gentle yoga stretching to release physical tension, followed by guided breathwork and meditation to help lower stress levels and regulate the nervous system. Participants then transition into NapTime™ itself — a curated sleep environment complete with beds, duvets, pillows, and eye masks designed to encourage restorative rest. The session takes place to the soothing sound of a live handpan, whose resonant metallic tones are commonly used in sound healing practices to promote deep relaxation and facilitate meditation.

In a further effort to encourage true disconnection, NapTime™ is entirely phone-free. Members are required to place their phones in a secure box before class begins, creating a distraction-free space. Research suggests up to 90% of people use their phones within the hour before bed, while exposure to blue light can suppress melatonin production and delay sleep onset. By encouraging participants to unplug for 45 minutes, GymNation aims to help reset overstimulated nervous systems and reinforce healthier sleep habits beyond the studio.

Desmond Wong, GymNation Coach, explains:
“Sleep is one of the most powerful recovery tools we have, yet it’s often the one most neglected. When you combine light movement, breathwork and meditation, you help the nervous system shift into a calmer state, lowering stress hormones and preparing the body for deep rest. NapTime™ is designed to help people truly unwind, reset mentally, and give their body the recovery it needs to perform at its best.”

GymNation emphasises that the class is intended to complement — not replace — traditional training. Incorporated into a broader fitness routine, structured recovery may support muscle repair, cognitive focus, and overall performance.

Dr Gurveen Ranger, Consultant Clinical Psychologist at Sage Clinics, who collaborated with GymNation on the initiative, adds:
“Sleep isn’t just rest — it’s one of the foundations of health and performance. Research shows that extending sleep can improve physical performance by around 9%, while chronic sleep loss can reduce performance by a similar margin. Sleep is not a luxury; it’s a biological necessity that interacts with every major system in the body.”

Rory McEntee, Chief Marketing Officer at GymNation, said:
“We’re used to telling people to push harder, lift heavier, and train longer. But without recovery, progress stalls. Globally, there is increasing focus on sleep optimisation and nervous system regulation, and we wanted to bring that conversation into the gym in a meaningful way. Sometimes the most powerful thing you can do for your fitness is absolutely nothing.”

With World Sleep Day highlighting the importance of rest, NapTime™ positions recovery as a core pillar of performance rather than an afterthought. In a culture focused on constant productivity, GymNation is inviting members to pause — and prioritise rest as part of their training.
