Layering trends come and go — dresses over jeans, doubled-up collared shirts — and the latest to return is a Y2K favourite: the layered top. Even Monica Barbaro has been spotted in the look while promoting her rom-com One Night Only with Callum Turner.
Stacking two tops turns a basic outfit into something more considered, especially when you play with contrasting textures, silhouettes and colours — crochet over cotton, spaghetti straps over a racerback, or, in Barbaro’s case, red over baby pink.
The aughts association is strong (this was practically Disney Channel uniform), but the current version feels more deliberate than nostalgic.
For anyone who doesn’t want to guess at the pairing, Mango has taken the effort out of it, selling pre-styled two-piece sets for around $30 — a low-stakes way to test the trend.
