Switzerland has no coastline, which has never stopped it from acting like it does. Every summer, a handful of lakefronts and riverbanks quietly turn into something closer to the Mediterranean: sand trucked in, palm trees potted up, deck chairs lined along the water, a DJ setting up around aperitif hour. Some of these places have been running for a decade. Others opened last season and already have a waiting list for sun loungers. Here are 14 worth the train ticket.
Dendê Beach Bar, Geneva
One year in, Dendê has already worked its way onto Geneva’s short list of summer addresses. Set in Genève-Plage and billed as the first of its kind on the city’s lakefront, it pairs palm trees and loungers with a wide view over Lake Geneva. The kitchen leans Argentinian and Italian, cooked over wood fire, and the cocktail list is built for long afternoons. Sun loungers with parasols can be reserved from Tuesday to Sunday. It stays open until midnight, which makes it equally viable for a terrace lunch or a sunset drink that runs late.

Beach Club Crans-Montana, Valais
Until Sunday 23 August 2026, the Beach Club is back on the shores of the Étang Long, turning an alpine resort into something that looks a lot like a seaside one. There’s a sand beach, loungers and cocktails for the horizontal crowd, plus beach volleyball, cable wakeboarding, WaterGames and tubing for everyone else. Families get a children’s playground and shaded play areas. It opens daily from 11am to 9pm, weather permitting, and both entry and parking cost nothing.

La Jetée, Nyon
Nyon’s beach bar has been running from April to October since 2014, and by now it’s less a venue than a summer habit. The formula is simple: a signature cocktail, feet in the sand, the last of the light on the lake. It reads chill early and loud later, depending on what the music is doing. Every Friday evening brings a musical after-work session, and one Thursday a month there’s “Impro-Transat,” a comedy happy hour. Weekly Zumba and yoga classes are also on the schedule, for anyone who wants to earn the spritz.

Montana Beach Club, Lucerne
It isn’t the French Riviera, and that’s rather the point: fewer people, more room to breathe. Perched above Lucerne at the Art Deco Hotel Montana, this one goes all in on the Mediterranean look with palm trees, deep cushions and white canvas parasols, then hands you a view of Lake Lucerne ringed by peaks. The ritual here is a cold spritz and a bowl of olives. There’s a recommended dress code — smart casual — which tells you most of what you need to know about the crowd. Open through September.

Li Lo Montreux, Vaud
Li Lo runs on lake time. A sun-soaked terrace, loungers built for napping, and a locally sourced menu that carries you from lunch through to aperitif. You swim, you dry off, you order a burrata and possibly don’t share it. Grilled vegetables and ceviche are also on the menu, and the Alps do the rest of the work in the background.

Beach House Morat, Fribourg
Picture a glass of rosé, warm sand underfoot, the sun going down over Lake Murten. Kids building castles on one side, a stand-up paddleboard waiting on the other. Attached to the Hotel Bad Murtensee, the Beach House gets the balance right between lazy afternoon and proper night out. Live concerts run through August, with Swiss dance group Los Calvados playing on 1 August. No reservations needed.

Tropical Corner, Geneva
Minutes from the city centre, Tropical is Geneva Beach’s worst-kept secret: surfboards, palm trees and cocktails sharing the same patch of shoreline. Start on the water with windsurfing, stand-up paddleboarding, foiling or wing foiling, using current-generation kit and lessons pitched at any level. Then dry off in the sun and move to the shaded terrace bar, hair still salty. It works even on a Tuesday.

Summer Beach, Bern
Every summer the Grosse Schanze becomes an urban beach looking out over the rooftops of Bern. There’s 2,500 m² of sand, plus palm trees, deck chairs, lounge seating, bars and a pop-up restaurant. Around aperitif hour the cocktails hand over to DJ sets and the evening stretches out. It opens in mid-May and has become one of the fixtures of the Bernese summer.

Riva Beach Club, Ticino
Vira, on Lake Maggiore, is where Switzerland does its best impression of Italy. Riva has golden sand, clear water and mountains behind, plus a restaurant right on the water, a beach club, a boutique hotel and boats for rent if you want to see the lake from the middle of it. Some places don’t need explaining; you just turn up. On the banks of the Rhine, Landestelle is where Basel goes when the sun holds: natural wine, craft beer, small plates and the rosemary walnuts people specifically come back for. There’s music, there are friends, and there’s the river changing colour as the evening wears on. Summer events fill out the calendar, but the appeal is mostly the lack of fuss.

Beachtown turns a stretch of Lake Biel into a seaside resort for the season. White furniture, spotless deck chairs, warm sand, somewhere between boho and city-slick. The Caribbean, minus the long-haul flight. On the shores of Lake Sempach, this one commits fully to the theme with palm trees, brightly painted huts and exotic cocktails. Romanshorn’s harbour spends the summer pretending to be a resort.
