Don’t Forget Your Lips: How to Shield Them From Summer Sun Damage

Why this delicate area needs its own SPF strategy — plus five lip products that get the job done.

When we think about applying sunscreen, the lips rarely make the list. But this small, delicate stretch of skin is one of the most exposed and least protected areas of the face, and it often shows the consequences of too much sun before anywhere else does.

The reason comes down to biology. Unlike the rest of the face, the skin covering the lips has an extremely thin outer layer and contains almost no melanin, the pigment responsible for offering some natural defense against ultraviolet light. Dermatologists at the Cleveland Clinic, one of the foremost medical and research institutions in the United States, note that the lips are especially vulnerable to sun damage precisely because the skin there is so much thinner than surrounding facial skin and holds so little melanin.

The warning signs mirror those of any sunburn, even though people frequently mistake them for ordinary dryness. Lips may turn red, swell, grow tender, and feel warm or stinging. When the exposure is more serious, tiny blisters, deep splits, and eventual flaking can develop.

Prevention, fortunately, is straightforward. The American Academy of Dermatology advises reaching for a lip balm rated SPF 30 or above and reapplying it at minimum every two hours while outside. Treating this as a non-negotiable part of your routine, right alongside facial sunscreen, makes all the difference. Dr. Veena Vanchinathan, a dermatologist and member of the Academy, adds an important reminder: no matter your skin type, anyone left unprotected in the sun is capable of burning.

5 SPF lip products to keep sunburn at bay

1. Espressoh, Lip-Me SPF 30
A broad-spectrum balm that guards against both UVA and UVB rays while keeping lips soft and comfortable in the sun. Its hydrating formula delivers a natural, luminous finish, making it easy to wear on its own or layer beneath lipstick.

2. Coola, Mineral Liplux SPF 30
This mineral option relies on zinc oxide filters to block UVA and UVB rays, helping fend off both burning and dryness. Cupuaçu butter and nourishing plant oils round out the formula, leaving lips supple with a natural look.

3. Ultra Violette, Sheen Screen SPF 50
A high-protection balm pairing UVA and UVB filters with a soft, glossy sheen, offered in subtle tinted shades as well. With lanolin, cocoa butter, and vitamin E, it deeply nourishes and helps defend against both dryness and premature aging.

4. Darling, Shield Me SPF 50+
A clear, very-high-protection sun stick designed with lips in mind, ideal for carrying everywhere to shield the most sensitive spots from UVA and UVB rays. Shea butter and vitamin E work to nourish and soften, all while leaving an invisible, comfortable finish.

5. Miamo, Lip Gloss Aging Defense SPF 30
A multitasking gloss that folds sun protection, treatment, and shine into one formula, helping prevent dryness and cracking under the sun. Hyaluronic acid, plumping peptides, and a mix of nourishing oils hydrate, smooth, and add a fuller, glossier effect.
