Coach’s Tabby bag has become the definition of a modern wardrobe staple: versatile, functional and effortlessly cool. It has been spotted on a long roster of famous arms, from Charli XCX and Bella Hadid to Elle Fanning, Lola Tung, Jennifer Lopez and Florence Pugh, the kind of cross-generational appeal that marks a genuine It bag rather than a passing trend.
Creative director Stuart Vevers first debuted the Tabby silhouette in 2019, and its cult status has since been cemented largely by that A-list clientele. Rather than reinventing the wheel, the design looks backward, drawing on archival Coach shapes from the 1970s and updating them for a contemporary wardrobe.
The result is a clean-lined, rectangular shoulder bag that rewards everyday use. Two detachable straps allow it to be styled as a crossbody or a clutch, while the interior offers multiple organizational compartments and a zippered exterior pocket keeps a phone and keys within easy reach.
That blend of form and function is a large part of the appeal. In a market crowded with novelty shapes and logo-heavy statement pieces, the Tabby’s restraint reads as quietly confident, a bag that complements an outfit without shouting over it.
It also speaks to a broader mood in accessories, where heritage and practicality are increasingly prized over spectacle. By mining its own archive and letting the design do the talking, Coach has produced a bag that feels both nostalgic and current, and one that, judging by the company it keeps, shows no sign of losing its grip on the fashion set.
